It has been with deep sorrow that the Russian Academy of Arts learnt of the untimely death of one of the brilliant creative intellectuals of these days, People's Artist of Georgia, Academician of the USSR Academy of Arts, our colleague and  friend Merab K. Merabishvili (1931-2022).

The Georgian and world culture has suffered a heavy loss. On January 11, 2022 passed away the distinguished artist, designer, sculptor who created his original picturesque world and whose sculptures are known in many cities of the world. The art of Merab Merabishvili and his gift of creating a unique atmosphere of immersion into art are very close in spirit to the entire academic community. The man of great talent, holder of numerous honors and awards, he has made a considerable   contribution to the promotion of the 20th -21st century art. In our memory Merab Merabishvili will forever remain a strong, talented, handsome and optimistic man.

For me and the Tsereteli family this loss is huge and irreparable. He was our close friend and talented creator with whom we went through life together for many years. On behalf of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Arts I express our deep condolences, we grieve and share the pain of his  family and loved ones. Let the memory of Merab Merabishvili be blessed and eternal.

Zurab Tsereteli, President of the Russian Academy of Arts
