The Russian Academy of Arts presents a solo exhibition of the People’s Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Boris Messerer featuring  about 50 graphic sheets and paintings dedicated to St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and produced by the artist since the late 1990s. The first Messerer’s watercolor Leningrad landscapes date back to 1955. The main hero of his devotion to the city is the Moika river adjacent to the Palace square, Millionnaya street, the Big Neva and other key places of interest, which embankments, bridges and buildings mirror the city atmosphere, special rhythm, mood changes.

One and the same views are perceived differently in graphics and painting. The color depiction of St. Petersburg does not base on the hidden drama typical to Messerer’s coal drawings, it presents the city as the magnificent and brilliant capital of Russia. The exhibition is a good opportunity to see the works executed by the artist in various techniques allowing the artist, who is also famous as a stage designer, master of building panoramic perspectives and author of installations, to express diverse interpretations of St. Petersburg history and soul. The display offers unexpected angles of the city perception, gives rise to new feelings and reflections associated with St. Petersburg.
